Little help needed for the slap in Example 11

Hey, everyone. I’m on to example 11 in this course and I’m loving it so far but I can’t get anywhere near the consistency, crispness or volume of the slap that Griff gets. I can get a pretty good one using the side of my thumb against the fifth and sixth strings if I’m not holding a pick, but as soon as I hold a pick I can’t bring my thumb down from nearly as high.

I’m wondering if I’m doing something completely wrong. Is Griff hitting the strings with his fingernails? What’s generating the sound? Is there a video on this site anywhere about how to do this correctly?

I think I remember him saying that he uses a bit of fingernail.
